My eyes flickered open. Where was I? I quickly sat up and looked at my surroundings. An endless void encircled me, and all was quiet. I sat in space for a second before realizing what was going on. I reached for my face before realizing I had a helmet on.

“What is this?” I tried to speak, but nothing came out of my mouth.

As I looked around for some sign to show me what was happening, I noticed it. A bright blue orb with green spots floating around in space with me. I didn’t recognize it at first, until I realized, “This was the planet I’d been looking for!”

However, the lack of gravity in space prohibited me from moving at my own will. Floating away, I could only watch as the planet “Earth” moved further and further away from my grasp.

Paralyzed in space, forever watching, and waiting for it to come back to me.

Sleeping, breathing

Title: Sleeping, breathing

I sit in the corner of my room.

The silence fills my ears.

The moment of peace feels like an eternity at first,

Until it ends.

An uncomfortable noise disrupts the silence,

A kind of raspy breathing that sends a chill down my spine.

I turn to find the source of the noise.

A small plush sits on my window,

A sleeping puppy that I almost thought was genuine.

Its flank rose and fell, and the raspy breathing only got louder.

I quickly switch off the puppy, hoping the feeling of nervousness would leave me.

However, it didn’t.

The raspy breathing continued, as did my sense of dread.

Broken Mug

I stand alone in a store

Watching for something that might spark my interest

Perhaps a shiny necklace

Maybe a piece of clothing

But as I browse the aisles, I notice something else

A box of damaged goods

Items which had been returned or broken

Items which had braved more than brand new pieces that were proudly showcased

Items which had less appeal than their sparkly counterparts

I notice a strawberry mug with a chip in its handle

It shines like new, nearly perfect

But only nearly perfect

And yet, I pick it up

Despite its flaws, it sparks my interest more than any perfect item

And so I take it

In all its tattered glory

I’ve never seen a mug more perfect.

The “one-sided” story

Tess was FUMING. Diana had taken her one and only favorite jacket, and now claimed that it belonged to her. Of course, nobody knew why Tess was mad about a jacket, of all things. Besides, that jacket robbery wasn’t the only thing that had happened.

Diana’s twin sister had stolen the jacket that she had received from Tess. Diana felt terrible, because she couldn’t find the jacket anywhere, and her twin, Jean, refused to reveal where she had put it. Diana had promised to return the jacket the previous day, but now with no idea where it had gone, Diana knew she couldn’t keep her promise.

Meanwhile, Jean had the jacket stashed away in her closet when she wasn’t wearing it. She believed Diana had purchased the jacket at a local clothing store. She had also been confused as to why a random girl tried to take her jacket away. Jean may not have purchased the jacket, but she had gotten it fair, and square.

[Two Days Later]

Diana was freaking out. She had no idea where the jacket had gone, and Jean hadn’t worn it since the day before. Suddenly, she thought of the idea to search Jean’s closet. As she slipped through the hallway, she checked to be sure that nobody was around, before quickly slipping into her twin’s room. As she looked around, she saw a green jacket sticking out of her closet. Quickly, Diana ran forward to grab it.

Jean had just come back from the grocery store and was going to stop by her room before putting everything away. As she stepped into her room, Jean noticed something was wrong. As she turned around, she saw her sister, Diana clinging onto clothing lodged in her closet.

“What are you doing in my room?!” Jean screeched.

Diana yelled back, “Getting my friend’s jacket back!”

“Friends? I thought it was yours-” Jean murmured.

“Of course it isn’t mine, this cost like- $1000! This was my friend’s, and I needed to borrow it.” Diana grumbled.

Jean stood there for a minute, with a shocked look on her face, before slowly opening her closet to allow Diana to grab the jacket. Jean apologized, before letting Diana leave.

The next day, Diana arrived at school, Tess came over to her, ready to blow, but before she could say anything, Diana handed her the jacket, and then apologized profusely. After explaining everything that happened, Tess forgave Diana, and life continued to move on as usual.

Miriam’s marvels

Miriam stood in the doorway to the famous store, “Musical Magnificence.” As she peered into the shop, she noticed a young man about her age, dusting a figurine. Miriam assumed that this man had been working at the store, so she walked over to ask him something.

“Excuse me sir, do you happen to have any flutes?” Miriam asked cautiously.

The man nodded, before continuing to dust the figurine. Miriam shuffled towards the sign that read, “Flutes”, before stopping and turning around to get a close look at the figurine.

“Hey, where did you get that figure?” Miriam asked slowly.

The man grinned for a second, before responding with a proud gleam in his eyes, “This figure was made thousands of years ago, I just happened to find it one day in my backyard. Rumor has it that the figure is magic. Anyways, I’m selling it for $1,000. Interested?”

Miriam blinked in disbelief, “Huh. Maybe, may I touch it?”

“Nope. It's too rare for some random perso- Hey, what are you?!”

Miriam touched the figure, and it disintegrated before her very eyes.

“Dang-it! I knew I shouldn't have invested in that guy by the alleyway… Get out!” The man yelled.

Miriam chuckled and ran out the door, thinking about the idea that she had almost purchased a counterfeit figure.

Muffin and Ann

Ann stood by her t.v., watching the morning news. Suddenly, a commercial came on. Ann sighed. The screen on the t.v. showed two people walking about, seeming to be unsure about something.

“Are you tired of taxes? Well-” Ann shut off the t.v.

Suddenly, Ann heard knocking on the door to her bedroom. She sighed and stood from her sofa, before quickly walking over to open the door.

“Who’s there?” Ann yelled from across the room.

A small mewl was heard from behind the door, and Ann realized the “person” was an animal. Ann slipped over to the door, and quietly opened it. As she looked down, she saw a small kitten with a note on its collar.

“Hmm… This says: ‘Muffin, I can’t care for her anymore, please help.’” Ann read aloud.

Ann blinked.

5 years passed, and many trash cans were toppled.

Over time, Ann and Muffin grew close, no matter what funny business happened, no matter what room became trashed, they were inseparable.

I Present To You...

Many complain that joy is hard to find.

Mary didn’t have that problem.

She found it fun to just play around with what she had.

Sometimes she would craft things.

Once she even made a treehouse.

Once, Mary was a child.

Now she’s a famous architect.

She was really fond of building.

She still is. But now she builds bigger things.

Like houses.

She doesn’t seem like much.

After all, she is but a mouse.

Mary doesn’t mind it, though.

She builds new things everyday.

She may not be that big.

But she’s a pretty cool mouse.

Alexandria finished her poem, before quickly grabbing her hat off the top of her head. People chanted and cheered for her, and she smiled, before pulling a small figure out of her hat.

“I present to you, Mary the mouse!” The small mouse wore a construction hat.

Mary looked up at her young owner, and thought to herself, “You’re a pretty cool human, Alexandria.”

Olive's Exploration- an excerpt

Towards midnight, Olive ran about in her room, bouncing off the walls, quite literally. As she pranced about in her own cozy little cabin, she heard the distant noise of a gunshot.

*Bang!*

“What on Earth are the guards doing!? I understand that they have to do their job and all, but those gunshots are so loud that they could wake everyone up!” Olive grumbled.

Olive sat still for a few seconds, and then grabbed a handful of candy, carefully unwrapping it and shoving it in her mouth. She then stuffed a few of the wrappers under her bed.

“Yum! Who knew that the dining hall gave out free candy at night!?” Olive wondered.

As she hopped around her cabin, she thought of something that might be somewhat risky, but genius!

Olive searched her room for several of her sister’s belts and her unusual collection of pocket knives.

“Aha! There they are. Finally, these belts will come to good use! Not like my sister wears them anyways,” Olive grabbed her items.

Unfortunately, it was a stormy night and it would be hard to make a grappling hook in the rain. The good thing? Olive was diligent. It took 30 minutes but she was finally able to make a sturdy enough grappling hook.

Olive opened her window and launched the rope as far upward as she could. It hit a handle on a stairwell and latched onto it. Olive grinned, satisfied. She tied the other end of the rope to a chair in her room and tested it to be sure it was steady. Finally, she began to climb. She climbed upward until she was a few feet away from the stairwell.

“Don’t look down… Don’t look down…” Olive looked down towards the distant ocean and gulped, “The ocean is sooooo far down…”

She blinked and looked back towards the stairwell. Olive focused all her energy on getting to the stairwell safely, rather than looking down. With a few confident strides, she finally reached the stairwell. Olive quickly hoisted herself onto the stairs and looked down at the rope. She tugged on the grappling hook a few times to make sure it was still in good condition, and then she sheltered herself underneath the small awning covering the stairwell.

“Whew, that was close! Thank goodness I didn’t fall to my death!” Olive gasped for breath, “Now I’m hungry.”

Olive giggled and then paused, as she heard footsteps approaching. Olive turned and saw a guard coming closer.

“Excuse me young lady, but you need to be in your cabin. Are you lost?” The guard spoke patiently, but Olive didn’t have time for shenanigans.

“Go away! This is none of your business!” Olive yelled at the guard.

“Please dear, it’s danger- OW!” Olive stomped on the guard’s foot and ran.

As the guard jumped about in pain, Olive sat down and slid across the wet floors, unable to balance due to it being wet. As she slid, Olive made sure to watch for any obstacles she could accidentally bump into.

“This is kind of like one of those video games where the character runs from some bad guy!” Olive thought to herself and grinned.

“Let’s go!” Olive shouted with glee, then felt instant regret when she realized that multiple guards were chasing her.

“Thank God I know the way around the ship, I think I know how to get out of this situation!” Olive thought to herself.

As Olive thought about what she could do, she slipped and ran straight into a pole. As she fell and sat still, feeling stunned, the guards caught up with her and one of them grabbed her.

“No, wait! I have a reasonable explanation for this!” Olive tried to grab onto the handles by the stairs.

Soon enough Olive’s hands felt raw and she had to let go of the handles. She grimaced as she was carried back to boring old cabin 257.

“So much for an escape plan…” Olive thought to herself and grumbled.

Stress Food

Jane often found herself looking for the fridge in times of stress. Though she would always stress eat, nobody ever seemed to notice, until Molly did.

It was a plain Saturday afternoon, and Jane was hanging out with her best friend, Molly.

The two were talking about how school was about to start, when Molly mentioned the summer reading list.

“There was a summer reading list?” Jane had yelped in surprise.

Molly nodded, and watched as Jane stood up and dusted herself off.

“That sucks, I didn’t know,” Jane mumbled, “I’m gonna get a snack to calm myself down.”

“Jane, you can’t be going to look for snacks the second you feel stressed out,” Molly had protested, but Jane ignored her.

After a few minutes, Jane came back with a bucket of popcorn. Molly sighed and the two continued talking about school.

Changing the subject, Molly asked Jane a question, “Hey, if you’re so stressed about the list, then why not start on it? I can help!”

“Ughhh. It’s too late, we only have 2 weeks! There isn’t any point. Buzz off about it, will you?” Jane grumbled.

Molly sighed. She knew that what Jane was doing was unhealthy, but what could she do? Suddenly, an idea popped into Molly’s mind.

“A trick! I’ll use odd ingredients so she won't like stress eating.” Molly thought to herself.

A few days later, Jane came over to Molly’s house. The two decided to play video games and chat. Quickly, Jane became stressed as she kept losing whatever game they played. As expected, She went to the kitchen. Molly had added funny ingredients to all of the snacks she knew Jane would take, and as she waited, Molly felt mischievous. Soon enough, Jane came back with cookies.

“Aha! I added almond extract to those,” Molly thought to herself and snickered, “A lot of almond extract. Jane will be in for a surprise!”

Molly watched as Jane munched and swallowed the cookies. Finally, she couldn’t hold it in anymore after Jane began making funny faces.

“HAH! That’s what you get for stress-eating too much. A face full of almond extract!” Molly laughed.

As she laughed, Molly started to notice Jane turning an odd shade of pink-ish purple.

“Hey, you okay?” Molly asked, feeling nervous.

Jane gasped for breath, “I’m allergic to almonds you dummy!”

Molly’s eyes widened and after a few seconds, Jane passed out. Molly quickly dialed 911 and paramedics were able to help Jane.

As Molly arrived at the hospital, she requested to go to Jane’s room.

After arriving in Jane’s room, Molly ran over to Jane’s bed and started apologizing.

“You’re lucky you had a phone. I’m deathly allergic to almonds.” Jane spoke in a raspy voice.

After that day, Molly and Jane never got along as well, and every time Molly looked at food, she felt guilty and remembered the day that stress-food became deadly.

Grudge

2016, November 18th

Claire was walking down the street one sunny morning, looking for her new middle school.

“Vermont Middle School… Where are you?” She thought to herself as she searched the crowded streets.

Finally, she spotted a prestigious looking school, with the name “Vermont Middle School” on a small sign next to the place. She watched the magnificent building standing on Cherry-blossom Street for a second. Claire grinned and quickly ran over to the building, only to bump into a taller girl.

“Hey! Watch where you're going!” The girl yelled.

Claire face-palmed and ran quickly, eager to get into the building, away from the crowded streets.

“Woah… This place is huge!” Claire whispered.

She quickly opened her backpack and pulled out a white sheet of paper.

“Okay. Room B-303. Where could that be?” As Claire wondered to herself, a girl about her height appeared next to her.

“Hey! Are you new? I’m Maxine. Nice to meet you!” The girl practically shouted, sounding excited.

“Uh- I’m Claire.” Claire mumbled.

Maxine grinned, “You lost? Let me help you.”

Before she could protest, Claire was dragged off by Maxine.

“Ooh! You have the same home-room as me! Perfect. Follow me.” Maxine announced, ecstatically.

“Okay? Where is- Augh!” Claire tripped and stumbled into a trashcan, plummeting onto the floor.

“Come-on! We don’t have all day,” Maxine helped Claire up and continued dragging her towards class.

Claire grinned and followed Maxine, “A new friend!” She thought.

2019, December 15th

Claire bounced out of bed and pulled out her phone to text Maxine.

“Hey Bestie! Can’t wait to meet you at the mall!” Claire typed.

“Yup! See ya there…” Maxine had replied.

Claire changed into a nice outfit, ate breakfast, and bounced out the door.

Once she had arrived at the mall, she pulled out her phone, to text Maxine.

“I’m here! Where are you?” Claire typed quickly.

“I’m at the clothing store section of the mall, duh.” Maxine sent back.

“Odd attitude,” Claire thought to herself, but shrugged it off.

Once she had gotten to the clothing section, Claire searched for Maxine, and quickly spotted her standing with someone else. Claire waved and skipped over.

“Hey Claire. This is my friend, Skylar.” Maxine spoke in a cold tone.

“Hey Skylar! I’m Claire.” She shook hands with Skylar eagerly.

“Anyways, let's go.” Maxine grumbled.

“Something was definitely up with Maxine,” Claire thought to herself.

2019, December 27th

Claire sat in her room, chewing on a few mini pretzels. Suddenly, her phone buzzed.

*BZZT!*

Out of surprise, she jumped, but then grabbed her phone. It was a text from Maxine. She quickly opened the chat to read the message.

“Hey, Claire. Meet me at the local ice cream shop, we need to talk.” Maxine’s message read.

“On my way!” Claire quickly texted back.

As she got her sweater on, she wondered what had happened, that Maxine needed to meet so suddenly.

When she arrived, she searched the area for Maxine. Finally, she spotted her at a table, licking an ice cream cone. Claire ran over quickly and sat down.

“Hey Maxine! What’s up?”

“Hi, Claire. I have urgent news.” Maxine grumbled.

“Tell me!!!” Claire said.

“Ugh. Fine. You’re out, Skylar’s in.” Maxine growled.

“Huh?!”

“Let me put this in a way you’ll understand. I. Am. Replacing. You. With. Skylar.” Maxine growled.

“What, why?” Claire asked.

“BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO OBLIVIOUS! You don’t know anything.” Maxine shouted.
People turned their heads to see what was going on, and Claire gulped.

“How am I oblivious?” Claire whined.

“YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND BODY LANGUAGE FOR ONE!” Maxine screamed. “Secondly, you’re way too friendly. Finally, I just don’t like you anymore!”

“I’m being dumped?” Claire thought to herself, “This can’t happen. Oh no.”

2022, January 8th

Claire walked down the sidewalk to Washington high. People gasped as she passed, or they just stared in awe. Why wouldn’t they? Since she had been dumped, she used her anger towards Maxine to advance in class. Not only did she have the highest grades, but she was the most popular girl in the school. As Claire walked in full strides, she heard fast footsteps behind her, and as she turned, she noticed something familiar. No, someone. As she looked, that ‘someone’ grew into focus. It was Maxine, and she was running straight towards her. As Claire ducked out of the way, Maxine stopped and turned to face her.
“O.M.G! Claire, is that youuuu? I just switched to Washington high, but I never knew you would be here!” Maxine gushed.

Claire wasn’t buying it. The Maxine she remembered was kind of rude.

“What do you want?” Claire growled.

“Well, Skylar dumped me, and I thought that since we were besties once, maybe we could be friends again?” Maxine confessed.

Claire smirked, “As if.”

Maxine’s jaw dropped, “But I was nice to you! Is this how you treat your best friend?”

“Ex best friend,” Claire corrected, “And last I checked, you dumped me.”

“WhaaaAaat? I would never!” Maxine lied.

“The deed is done. Now, I need to get to class. Next time, at least try to sound innocent,” Claire frowned, and left.

“She knows I’m the type to hold a grudge, but she probably forgot. Typical Maxine.” Claire thought to herself and shrugged.

Just Tired

It was a cold Sunday morning, and Maria had forgotten her jacket. As she stood in the cold, she shivered. She had finally finished her morning walk and was getting ready to go home.
As she stood, Maria heard the distinct crunch from next to her.

*Crunch!*

Someone had stepped on a leaf. Maria turned to see who did it, but all she saw was a dark shadowy figure with glowing white eyes. The odd figure began making weird noises.

“BRGGH!” The creature growled, “VRRRG!”

Out of shock, Maria blinked once, twice… The figure was gone, and all that greeted her was a cold gust of wind, and as she stood by that small street, it began to rain. As the light changed to a walk sign, she ran as quickly as she could, in hopes of making it inside her home. The rain pounded on her head, and she wished she had just stayed home.

“And then… Then…” Maria had spoken,telling her sister, Claire what had happened.
“I think you’re just tired, sis. Maybe try taking a break from morning walks.” Claire told her.

Though her sister didn’t believe her, Maria knew what she saw was real.

My Mount Rushmore

There was once a puppy. She was owner-less. That made her upset.

She was a Labrador retriever. Nobody wanted her, sadly. Then she found a house she'd never seen before. It looked haunted. She got nervous. Then two kids came outside!

She stared at them. They stared at her. She barked. They opened the gate for her. She didn't budge. She watched as a kitten came outside. They pet the kitten.

It was a girl!

The kitten mewed a greeting to her. She barked back. The kitten smiled and said, "Hi."

She said, "Hi," back. They touched noses in greeting. The kitten mewed, "Catch me if you can!"

The kids said, "We will call you Muffin." Muffin smiled. She had found a family.

They played together. The kitten, now a cat, was called, "Cupcake."

Muffin and Cupcake had puppies/kittens. They were pittens.

Muffin's Mount Rushmore is Cupcake. Best friends forever.

It's Hard to Beat a Person (Cat) Who Never Gives Up

Once, there was a cat who wanted to be an artist. But his classmates thought he couldn't draw well. They told him, "You look dumb drawing."

"Dummie!" taunted one cat.

"But-" he cried.

He cried every day and night because of them.

But he didn't give up. He didn't let his classmates put him down. He kept trying, and he got better at drawing. Finally, the others stopped making fun of his work.

Eventually, he was the best in class at drawing! He never ever gave up.

"Fight!" he thought, "Never give up!"

He worked hard. He fought well.

After five years, he became a famous and popular artist.

"I proved you wrong!" he said, claws out.

"Mercy please?" cried his would be defiers.

Moral: He fought hard, and succeeded. He never ever gave up.
